Transforming Cloud Collaboration & Distributed Production

Building a scalable operating model that connected facilities, cloud platforms, production teams, and external partners while strengthening business continuity.

Executive Challenge

Paramount’s production and post-production teams operated across multiple facilities, brands, technologies, and external production partners.

Many workflows depended on physical media movement, local storage, facility-specific systems, and direct access to production infrastructure. These dependencies limited flexibility, created operational bottlenecks, complicated cross-location collaboration, and increased business-continuity risk.

The organization needed to modernize how teams accessed media, collaborated creatively, and operated production environments across locations.

The challenge was not simply enabling remote access.

It was creating a secure and supportable distributed-production operating model capable of maintaining performance, governance, user experience, and operational continuity.

Organizational Context

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, production teams were already becoming more distributed.

Creative employees, external partners, business units, and facilities increasingly needed to collaborate across geographic and organizational boundaries.

I helped move key workflows toward remotely operable and cloud-accessible environments before distributed work became an enterprise-wide requirement.

That preparation became critical when the pandemic accelerated the need for remote production, cloud collaboration, and business continuity across the company.

The same capabilities later supported facility consolidations, geographic transitions, remote production partners, and long-term cloud-workflow strategy.

Strategic Leadership

  • Developed a distributed-production strategy connecting facilities, cloud environments, remote employees, and external partners.
  • Prepared operational teams for remote work by making workflows, systems, and support practices increasingly location independent.
  • Implemented and governed collaboration capabilities using LucidLink, AWS, Adobe Frame.io, Signiant, Aspera, Wildmoka and remote-production technologies.
  • Connected production operations across New York, Los Angeles, Nashville, Studio City, Washington, and remote environments globally.
  • Established onboarding, permissions, quotas, access controls, security requirements, support practices, and operating standards.
  • Partnered across Production, Engineering, Infrastructure, Security, Creative, Operations, and vendor organizations.
  • Led migrations and facility transitions while protecting active productions from operational disruption.
  • Balanced cloud innovation with cost control, platform governance, performance, reliability, and user adoption.

Key Executive Decisions

Decision 1

Build remote capability before it became an emergency

Moved workflows toward remote operation and cloud collaboration early, creating organizational readiness that became critical during the pandemic.

Decision 2

Design an operating model, not a collection of tools

Connected platforms, support processes, governance, security, and user onboarding into a coordinated production workflow.

Decision 3

Preserve creative performance while increasing flexibility

Selected workflow approaches that reduced location dependency without undermining production speed, media access, or creative collaboration.

Decision 4

Use distributed workflows to enable broader business transformation

Applied the same operating model to facility consolidation, geographic transitions, remote partnerships, and long-term production modernization.

Additional Organizational Impact

  • Strengthened continuity for production and post-production teams during the COVID-19 disruption.
  • Reduced dependence on physical media transportation and individual facilities.
  • Expanded access to media and creative workflows across locations.
  • Supported facility consolidations and operational transitions with reduced disruption.
  • Created reusable governance, onboarding, security, and support practices.
  • Improved collaboration between internal teams and external production partners.
  • Established a stronger foundation for future cloud-production and remote-editing strategies.

Organizational Impact

The transformation changed remote production from an exception into a supported enterprise capability.

Teams gained greater flexibility in where and how they worked, leadership gained more options for facility and infrastructure strategy, and Paramount became better prepared to respond to disruption and organizational change.

The model also showed that cloud transformation creates the most value when technology, support, governance, security, and operating practices are designed together.

Leadership Insight

Resilience is not created during a crisis.

It is created by building adaptable workflows, capable teams, and scalable operating models before the crisis occurs.

The technology enabled remote work, but operational preparation and organizational trust made the transformation sustainable.
